At 5.30pm yesterday (Tuesday 9 December) a cluster of campaigners dressed as Santa Claus presented an over-sized Christmas card to the Department for Business, Industry and Skills (BIS) on behalf of the million people across Europe who had signed a petition calling for the end of controversial trade deals being pushed through between the EU and North America.

The UK government has urged British company GCM Resources to assess how its planned coal mine in Bangladesh would affect the human rights of local people, and has condemned the company for breaching international guidelines on ethical corporate behaviour. Its findings, released today, state that the project “has aroused considerable opposition in Bangladesh, leading to violent protests, and an even more violent response by the authorities there.”

This week the Scottish Land Action Movement launched, and added itself to a growing global movement of activists, small-scale farmers, landless workers, indigenous communities and many others all working to shift control of land from the hands of the few to the hands of the many.

The much delayed next round of TTIP negotiations is now set for the first week in February. Campaigners from across the EU are holding their own meeting to discuss strategy and a plan for the next stage in the campaign, having recently secured one million signatures on the self-organised European Citizens’ Initiative petition.

5 December 2014

On Monday evening I attended a workshop organised by WDM aimed at building the skills and knowledge of people who want to lobby their MPs and MEPs to stop TTIP. Speakers included MPs Zac Goldsmith (Conservative), Geraint Davies (Labour), Andrew George (Lib Dems), MEP Jean Lambert (Green Party) and Polly Jones of WDM.
